Film: Lech Kowalkski's STORY OF A JUNKIE & Richard Kern's ZOMBIE HYPE

Oct 7  10:30 PM - Midnite

$10.00

Theatre 80 St Marks, 80 St Marks Place
From Wikipedia: STORY OF A JUNKIE is a 1987 drama film directed by Lech Kowalski and starring John Spaceley. Distributed by Troma Entertainment. Filmed in documentary-style, the film follows the character of Gringo, a young man looking for fortune in New York, only to fall into heroin addiction. The movie has amassed quite a reputation in certain circles for its depictions of hard drug usage in New York City's East Village area. Many of the cast members, including leading man John Spaceley, are actual junkies. The numerous shooting-up sequences are reportedly entirely real, as are many of the drug dens and their denizens. Perhaps even more notable than the cinema verite structure is the almost total lack of moralizing on the part of the producers or its characters. Troma Entertainment hails STORY OF A JUNKIE as one of the company's best films; it's one of the most well-known outside of the films directed by Troma founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz. Tonight, we'll be showing a new, better quality print of this legendary underground EV epic... Also on the bill: Richard Kern's ZOMBIE HYPE... If you bought tickets for Jennifer Blowdryer's 86'd, these screenings are included in the ticket price.

SAN FRANCISCO'S THRILL PEDDLERS PRESENT... VICE PALACE: The Cockettes' Last Musical

Oct 21  11 PM - 1 AM

$15.00

Theatre 80 St Marks, 80 St Marks Place 212-388-0388
Straight from San Francisco, The Thrillpeddlers present a concert version of their smash hit revival, VICE PALACE: The Last Cockettes Musical on Friday & Saturday, October 21 & 22 as part of the 2011 HOWL! Festival, at Theater 80. Selections from the show can be seen earlier in the week at the New York Library for the Performing Arts on Monday, October 17, as part of The Martin Worman Papers - which takes an in-depth look into the life and career Mr. Worman - actor, playwright, lyricist, director, female impersonator, activist and academic... Loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death”, VICE PALACE was written by Martin Worman & Scrumbly Koldewyn in 1972 as a vehicle for Divine and actress Mink Stole (best known as stars of cult-director John Waters’ films), and The Cockettes. VICE PALACE follows Divina, (Leigh Crow), an eccentric and wealthy woman who spares no expense to keep her jet-set party guests entertained, while the villagers just beyond the walls of her lavish estate are ravaged by the plague. Each performance must top the next in this bizarre race to escape the one uninvited party guest – death! Originally produced as a “Nocturnal Dream Show” and performed at midnight at the old Palace Theatre in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco on Halloween weekend of 1972, VICE PALACE was the fabled and fabulous Cockettes’ final stage presentation... THE COCKETTES were a gender-bending theatrical troupe who not only originated many outrageous shows, but also exerted a profound influence on the culture of our times, from the phenomenon of midnight movies, to glitter rock stars and their outrageous fashions.... Thrillpeddlers new adaptation stylistically imparts --much of the beautiful, much of the wanton, and much of the bizarre!-- while also giving a nod to the early 1960s films of Frederico Fellini, specifically LA DOLCE VITA and JULIET OF THE SPIRITS. Directed by Russell Blackwood and staring drag king superstar Leigh Crow as Divina and composer, co-author and original Cockettes member Srumbly Koldewyn... THE THRILLPEDDLERS (www.thrillpeddlers.com) have been performing their unique brand of horror and fetish theatre in San Francisco since 1991. Under the direction of Russell Blackwood, Thrillpeddlers are continuously engaged in translating, adapting and producing classic plays from the infamous repertoire of Le Théâtre du Grand Guignol and producing other works inspired by the Grand Guignol tradition. In 2008, Thrillpeddlers embraced another niche theatrical genre with the company’s annual Theatre of the Ridiculous Revival, Which have included Charles Busch’s THEODORA, SHE-BITCH OF BYZANTIUM, Charles Ludlam’s JACK IN THE BEANSTALK, and Link Martin and Scrumbly Koldewyn’s PEARLS OVER SHANGHAI (the Revivals’ 2009 offering which went on to a twenty-two month run in SF).

SALOON SOCIETY is a stage version of Bill Manville's brilliant VILLAGE VOICE column of the late 1950's, capturing the drinking days and nights of the bar crowd of the Beat era. Set to a jazz score, the play takes us to the San Remo, where the lost-and-found souls Manville calls the -intellectuals, horned-rimmed men, poets, dancers, the beat and the bearded and their black-stockinged women, acrobats, tenors, sexual engineers, Spanish waiters, bust-ups and run-aways- act out their lives in vivid poetic fashion. The NY TIMES called SALOON SOCIETY "a downtown bromide, clever, the essence of bitter-sweet, and studded with little gems of truth.” With J. Eric Cook, Dana Watkins, Nalina Mann, David Arthur Bachrach, Tony Torn, Frances Uku, Alex Bilu, Carmit Levite, and Dan Illian. Direction and stage adaption by Jim Milton, with assistance by Joan Meltzer. Immediately after the show, there will be a talk-back led by noted biographer, Patricia Bosworth.

SAN FRANCISCO'S THRILL PEDDLERS PRESENT... VICE PALACE: The Cockettes' Last Musical

Oct 22  11 PM - 1 AM

Running Time: 79 min... This documentary looks at the life and work of Robert Mapplethorpe, a world renowned and controversial photographer, who died of AIDS in 1989. It explores his photography, his relationship to the downtown New York art world, and the gay S & M club scene prevalent in the 1970s & 80s. His infamously explicit pictures of the New York's Gay leather underground were considered groundbreaking and made him a cause celebré. Mapplethorpe's portraits, flowers, erotic subject matter and artistic presentation, elevated the photograph to serious art, worthy of exhibition in galleries and museums. In this documentary we see a 1983 interview with the youthful and mythic Robert Mapplethorpe. In his downtown loft, he talks about his ideas, inspiration, and the highly charged subject matter depicted in his work. Included are interviews with Jack Walls, Mapplethorpe's partner; artist Brice Marden; Holly Solomon, his first dealer; his father, Harry Mapplethorpe; and Father Stack, his priest in Floral Park, Long Island. Also commenting are curator Richard Marshall, brother Edward Mapplethorpe, photographer Gilles Larrain, lawyer Michael Ward Stout, artist Louise Bourgeois, and biographer Patricia Morrisroe... Q&A to follow.
