The Allen Ginsberg Poetry Festival: Epic reading by the royalty of Downtown Poetry of HOWL by:

 

John Giorno: A living legend, a Lower east Side icon, Giorno was a performance poet before there was performance poetry.   Author of 11 books and 28 cds/records, Giorno created the seminal “Dial-A-Poet” poetry label. He is one of the most brilliant performers of poetry you’ll ever hear – a gutsy snap, a living spirit, a shimmering veracity.

 

Taylor Mead: poet laureate of Andy Warhol’s Factory, world’s first Underground Film Star, and represented in the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection for the “Fairy Tale” he reads every Friday at the Bowery Poetry Club? Must be Taylor Mead!

 

The Mayhem Poets: Utilizing hip-hop rhythms and dynamic theatrical techniques, the Mayhem Poets have developed powerful performances and workshops to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to craft and perform original poetry. Their new project, Slam Chops, a youth performance poetry program to encourage self-realization & self-expression through the education and writings of poetry, begins at the Bowery Poetry this October. www.mayhempoets.com.

 

Gary Glazner’s Performance Poetry Drill Team "4 Minute Howl": The Precision Poetry Drill is synchronized swimming with words, a modern Greek Chorus. The PPDT is led by poet Gary Glazner, the Managing Director of the Bowery Poetry Club.

 

Stacy Szymaszek is the author of Emptied of All Ships, Pasolini Poems and Mutual Aid. She is the Artistic Director of the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church.

 

Poez! Poez is a spoken word artist the New York Daily News described as a voice musician in 1979, and Le Figaro of Paris called etonnant et imprevu. The Original street poet, whose legendary Washington Square al fresco pay-as-you-hear performances will be the main thread of his new solo theater piece, “Poet Bazookaed on 4th St.”

 

Bob Holman: “Dean of the Scene,” director of the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Festival, and proprietor of the Bowery Poetry Club. Most recent book: A Couple of Ways of Doing Something, a collaboration with Chuck Close (Aperture); CD:  The Awesome Whatever (Bowery Records). 

 

Aja Monet: Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion 2007; winner of numerous Spoken Word awards throughout the country; shared the stage and performed for the likes of Russell Simmons, Reverend Run, Foxy Brown, Doug E Fresh, Wyclef Jean, Black Ice, Amir Sulaiman as well as countless others.

 

Eboni: Poet, actor and dancer, she has performed and taught workshops all over the U.S. and internationally in West Africa through NYU Tisch and The 5th Project Theatre Collective.

 

Amy Ouzoonian  is a poet, performance artist, dancer, actress, playwright, producer, director, singer, designer and accordion player. She lives and creates in Queens.

 

Chavisa Woods works as an editor, coordinator and fundraiser for Tribes Magazine, based in the lower east side of Manhattan. Her writing has been published nationally and internationally. Her book of short fiction, "Love Does Not Make Me Gentle or Kind" Fly by Night Press- is scheduled for release in Sept 2007.

 

Danny Shot was the longtime editor and chief honcho of Long Shot magazine. His poetry is widely anthologized including Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry. His literary heroes are Pedro Pietri and Gregory Corso.

 

 Paolo Javier edits the online journal 2nd Avenue Poetry and is the author of 60 lv Bo(e)mbs (O Books) and the time at the end of this writing (Ahadada Books).

Rachel Levitsky is the author of Under the Sun (Futurepoem) and is the founder and co-editor of Belladonna Books.

Poet and playwright Filip Marinovich is a member of the Ugly Duckling Presse Collective. He is co-editor at New York Nights newspaper.

The Carl Solomon Book Expo is named for the neglected Beat legend who championed the first publication of William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac and inspired Allen Ginsberg's seminal poem Howl. The book fair’s presence continues the self publishing legacy of the East Village, but today the micro press meets the macro in a synergic meeting of literature, poetry, comics, graphic novels, and prints.
